The tall stool is the throne from which my children do show-and-tell, read their best works, talk to the class, give reports, show their works of art, or perform. If your budget is really tight, ask children to bring in some items with parental permission, of course. Avoid behavior problems with some children by allowing them the choice to stand up and do their work either at their own desks or at yours. It's a simple bit of advice, but it works. You can also use the pullouts as a convenient and semiprivate place to do conferencing and individual assessments. There is hardly a minute in the day when the pullouts are not in use by some member of our class. < previous page page_7 next page > < previous page page_8 next page > Page 8 The Kneehole The kneehole is the ultimate place for a child to push in a couple of floor cushions and read, study, talk to himself or herself, hum, or just be alone.
