Example text

To ask why something has meaning for some individual, one must understand the beliefs and conceptions of that individual. When we combine into a society, we carry forward our beliefs and conceptions and share them. We express our shared beliefs and conceptions by the way that we live and the way in which we communicate with one another. The human body is something about which we have complicated and often conflicting beliefs and conceptions. The body is valuable to us in many and diverse ways, from being the physical form through which we act, to being a source of pride, to being a reflection of God, to being a means through which to express sharing.

For example, the way a child values a piece of chalk in a classroom, as a means through which to learn a lesson, is different from the way the child values the chalk when wanting to play hopscotch. Because goods are valuable for different reasons at different times, different people may concurrently value a good in different ways. I may value the piece of chalk as being a useful way to communicate my message to you, but you may value it because it reminds you of your youth. In these circumstances, we both can value the chalk in our separate ways.

For example, if we regard long-term relationships and enjoyment as two faces of the same mode of valuation, say pleasure, we could determine which of the two participants in the sexual relationship most values the relationship in accordance with pleasure. Alternatively, even if no such fundamental mode of valuation exists, there may be some way of measuring or ranking the different modes of valuation applicable to the good and resolving any conflict according to which mode measures or ranks higher.
